The other day I was scrolling through TikTok when I stumbled upon a video that made me say, "There's no way that works." It was someone using a bobby pin to apply winged eyeliner, and the 15-second clip made the makeup hack seem like the easiest thing in the world. Being someone who's not the best at liquid liner, I had to try it out for myself.

According to the video posted by TikTok user @annnakra, all you need is a bobby pin and liquid eyeliner. Then, you simply coat the open end of the bobby pin in liner pigment before using it as a stamp to outline a pointed wing shape. Sounds easy enough, right?

I'm not going to lie and say I wasn't nervous to try this hack — black liquid liner in general just scares me — but I figured it was my duty as a beauty editor to put the method to the test. At first I used a felt-tip liner but wasn't able to get enough pigment onto the bobby pin for it to show up on my skin, so I opted for the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Liner ($18) instead — now that liner is pigmented.

This next part took me two tries: even though the bobby pin creates the perfect wing shape for you, you still need to line it up with the outer corner of your eye. After I was able to get the placement right, I pressed down and was left with a hollowed out wing shape. Then, it was time to extend the wing to my lash line, color it in, and repeat on side two.

Filling in the rest of the wing was the hardest part because, you know, the bobby pin was no longer doing the brunt of the work, but it was still much easier than attempting a cat eye from scratch. As someone who usually takes ages drawing and redrawing on just the tip of the wing, this hack cut down on that time significantly. (Using an eyeliner stamp, like the Lyda Beauty Cleopatra Cat Eye Stamp ($25), also does the trick.)

This makeup trick still took some skill to get right, and my wings were by no means perfectly symmetrical (a girl can dream!), but with a little practice, this TikTok hack will make applying winged liner a breeze.
